WEEKLY DEVOTION

Week 1: The King's Gambit

Scripture Reading:

“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” John 10:17–18 (ESV)

Devotional Thought:

We live in a world that trains us to avoid loss at all costs. We insure everything, back up everything, and protect everything. The constant message is clear: don’t risk it, don’t lose ground, don’t let go. Yet the Kingdom of God often moves in the opposite direction.

In chess there is a move called the “King’s Gambit,” where a player willingly sacrifices something early in the game—not because they are weak, but because they see further ahead. What looks like loss is actually strategy. Jesus embodied this. He made it clear that no one took His life from Him; He chose to lay it down. What appeared to be defeat was actually divine design.

Sometimes what feels like loss in our lives is not punishment but positioning. Before God gives us dominion in our hands, He establishes dominion in our hearts. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the Kingdom of God, and everything else will be added. Alignment comes before addition. God is more concerned with where our hearts are positioned than with what we are currently holding.

There are seasons when God allows temporary loss for permanent authority. In John 12:24, Jesus explains that a seed must fall into the ground and die before it produces fruit. Surrender is not subtraction; it is multiplication in disguise. Hebrews 12:11 reminds us that discipline is painful in the moment, but later it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace. God plays the long game.

When the board of your life shifts and things do not go according to plan, anxiety can start to whisper. But Isaiah 46:10 tells us that God declares the end from the beginning. He is not reacting to your situation; He is ruling over it. The King has never panicked about your future. What feels chaotic to you is already accounted for by Him.

The King’s Gambit was not reckless—it was redemptive. And because the King is calm, you can be calm too.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Is there something I am holding onto that God may be asking me to surrender?
  2. Am I seeking clarity before obedience in this season?
  3. Where might God be positioning me rather than promoting me?
  4. Do I truly believe that God is in control when my plans shift?

Prayer:

Father, thank You that You are never surprised by my circumstances. Thank You that what feels like loss is never wasted in Your hands. Help me to trust You with my position before I see the destination. Give me courage to surrender what You are asking for and align my heart with Your Kingdom. When anxiety rises and plans shift, remind me that You are steady and sovereign. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Action Step:

This week, identify one specific area where you need to release control—whether it is a timeline, a decision, or an outcome. Pray over it daily and intentionally place it in God’s hands instead of trying to manage it yourself.

Family Declaration:

As a family, declare together: “The King is not nervous about our future. We trust His strategy, we surrender what He asks for, and we seek His Kingdom first. The King is still in control.”
