The Elephant in the Room: Part 1

Luke 10:33 (NIV) "But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him."

The word that Jesus used for what the Samaritan felt toward the man on the side of the road is one of my favorite Greek words: splagma. We translate it as “compassion,” but in Greek it means “pity from your deepest soul.” This man was moved in his soul—when he saw him, he took pity on him.

He didn’t close his eyes to the need like the others did, and like so many people do today. No, he chose to see the need. That’s what Jesus does—He sees the need.

Declaration Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help me to see the needs of those around me and be willing to step in and help in any way I can. Whether it’s offering a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand, please give me the courage and compassion to serve others selflessly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
