Revive us again: Part 3

Revive Us Again: Talitha Cumi

The story of Jairus’s daughter and the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:22-42 is a powerful reminder of Jesus' ability to revive, restore, and resurrect what seems lost. In this part of our Revive Us Again series, we explore the significance of faith, persistence, and divine intervention in the face of hopelessness.

Two Sides, Two Crowds: Faith in Action

In Mark 5, we see two different situations—two desperate individuals seeking Jesus. Jairus, a synagogue ruler, publicly approaches Jesus, pleading for his daughter’s healing. Meanwhile, a woman suffering from a twelve-year illness, deemed unclean by society, reaches out in silent desperation. One cries out, the other acts in quiet faith, but both recognize that only Jesus can change their circumstances.

The law forbade Jesus, as a priest, from touching a bleeding woman. Yet, her faith drove her to break past cultural and religious barriers. She resolved that no matter what it took, she would reach out to Jesus. And when she did, healing came instantly.

How often do we allow pride, fear, or circumstances to keep us from reaching out? If we truly desire to rise, we must first be willing to humble ourselves. Faith requires action. Sometimes, we must crawl through life’s difficulties, pushing past obstacles, just to touch Jesus.

The Testing of Faith: When Delay Feels Like Denial

While Jesus healed the woman, messengers arrived to tell Jairus that his daughter had died. It seemed too late. The crowd even mocked Jesus when He declared that the girl was only sleeping.

Yet, Jesus was undeterred. He told Jairus, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Then, He removed the doubters and the noise from the room. Some of us need to do the same—eliminate the voices of negativity and unbelief in our lives so that we can hear the voice of Jesus calling us to rise.

Talitha Cumi: Arise!

Jesus entered the room, took the girl’s hand, and spoke the words: “Talitha, cumi,” meaning, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Immediately, she stood up and walked. What seemed dead was only sleeping, waiting for the voice of resurrection.

This story is more than an account of physical healing—it is a message for all of us. Nothing in our lives is beyond resurrection. No struggle, addiction, broken relationship, or lost hope is beyond Jesus’ touch. He still speaks, Talitha Cumi, over:

  • The broken marriage: Be restored!
  • The wayward loved one: Come home!
  • The shattered dream: I have a better plan for you!
  • The shameful past: You are forgiven and free!
  • The lost soul: I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

It’s Time to Rise

Many of us are like Jairus’s daughter—lying still, trapped in fear, pain, or doubt. Perhaps we’ve accepted defeat, convinced that our situation is hopeless. But Jesus enters our space, speaks life, and commands us to rise. Will you listen? Will you believe?

No matter what has happened in the past, no matter how long you’ve been struggling, Jesus is calling you today. Nothing is beyond His power to redeem.

Talitha Cumi. It’s time to rise.
