WEEKLY DEVOTION

RESURRECTION SUNDAY

Scripture

Matthew 28:5–6 (NIV) “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”

Devotional Thought

Have you ever noticed that the places we try hardest to avoid are often the very places God chooses to move? The painful places, the uncertain places, the places that feel like endings. That’s exactly where the resurrection happened.

The earthquake didn’t happen in a palace or a place of comfort. It happened at the tomb—the place where hope was buried, where pain was real, and where everything looked finished. But what seemed like the end was actually the beginning of the greatest victory. Friday felt like loss. Saturday felt like silence. But Sunday brought the shift.

The resurrection reminds us that God doesn’t always remove us from painful places—sometimes He transforms them. The same place that held death became the place that revealed life. What looked sealed was suddenly opened. And the stone wasn’t rolled away so Jesus could get out—it was rolled away so we could see in. God wanted there to be no doubt. The promise wasn’t gone. It was alive.

But the story doesn’t stop there. When Jesus left the tomb, He left the grave clothes behind. They were no longer needed. And that speaks directly to us today. It’s possible to step into new life but still carry old things—fear, shame, past labels, or pain. Resurrection is not just about coming out of the tomb; it’s about leaving behind everything that belongs to it.

Some things in your life may have felt buried—dreams, hope, faith, purpose. But if Jesus didn’t stay in the grave, then what God has spoken over you isn’t buried forever either. The ground can shift in the very place you thought was over.

Reflection Questions

  1. What “tomb” in my life have I been avoiding or writing off as finished?
  2. Am I believing that God can bring life out of that place?
  3. Are there “grave clothes” I am still holding onto that I need to let go of?
  4. What is God inviting me to “come and see” for myself?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the power of the resurrection. Thank You that what looks like the end is never the end with You. Help me to trust You even in the places that feel painful or uncertain. Give me the courage to let go of anything that belongs to my past and to step fully into the new life You have given me. Let Your resurrection power bring life to every area that feels buried. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action Step

Identify one “grave cloth” you need to let go of this week—whether it’s fear, shame, or a limiting belief—and intentionally replace it with truth from God’s Word.

Family Declaration

We declare that Jesus is alive and that His resurrection power is at work in us. We will not stay bound to what God has already set us free from. We leave behind every grave cloth and step into new life. What was buried is not the end—God is bringing it back to life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
