New Wine Part 4: Poured out service

Introduction

In this final part of the “New Wine” series, we explore what it means to be poured out for God, allowing His Spirit to work in and through us for service. Today’s message is a call to align ourselves with God’s plan and be ready for the outpouring of His Spirit.

Joel’s Prophecy and the Promise of Overflow

Joel 2:28 (ESV) says:

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.”

This passage is often recited, but it’s important to see its broader context. A few verses earlier, in Joel 2:24 (AMP), it says:

“And the threshing floors shall be full of grain, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.”

This is the promise of overflow—a promise that when God pours out His Spirit, He does so abundantly. Just as Acts 2:13 describes the disciples being filled with new wine, so too are we to be filled with His Spirit today.

Proximity Matters: Which Side of the Door Are You On?

During the outpouring at Pentecost, people had the choice of which side of the door to stand on. They could either be part of the anointing or stand back and mock. Jesus, in His wisdom, knew this division would happen. As John 14:17 says,

“He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

Are we available to receive this outpouring, or are we standing at a distance, skeptical?

The Power of Availability

In the story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding feast, He used the ceremonial stone jars that were available (John 2:1-11). The key was availability. Similarly, in 2 Kings 4, Elisha asks the widow, “What do you have in the house?” She had only a jar of oil, yet God used that to provide abundantly.

We often overlook what we already have. In God’s hands, our “ordinary” becomes extraordinary. 2 Timothy 2:21 reminds us to be vessels for honor, “sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”

Laying Down Old Flames for New Fire

As the song “New Wine” says:

“For where there is new wine there is new power, there is new freedom, and the kingdom is here. I lay down my old flames to carry your new fire today.”

Many of us have “old flames”—memories of past spiritual highs or times when we were on fire for God. However, God calls us to lay down those old flames in order to carry His new fire. In Luke 5:39, Jesus warns against longing for the old:

“And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

We cannot cling to the past while expecting to receive the new anointing God has for us. Our hands must be free to carry the new fire.

The Call for New Wine

Joel 3:18 (NKJV) promises:

“And it will come to pass in that day that the mountains shall drip with new wine, the hills shall flow with milk, and all the brooks of Judah shall be flooded with water; a fountain shall flow from the house of the LORD and water the Valley of Acacias.”

God is calling His people to come out and be separate, to receive His new wine and embrace the fresh work He is doing. As He pours out His Spirit, He delivers His people from spiritual bondage, mind-blinding spirits, and voices of confusion.

God is leading His people out of the old wineskin and into something fresh and new. His Spirit will stir within us a passion and delight, renewing the fire in our hearts.

A Generation Called to Be Poured Out

God is searching the earth for a generation that will choose Him over the crowd, the secret place over public recognition. He is calling those who are willing to lay down their earthly crowns and reputations to follow Him, picking up the new mantle He has for them.

As we close this series, ask yourself: Are you ready to be a vessel for His new wine? Are you willing to lay down the old and be filled with the new fire of His Spirit? God is pouring out His Spirit—may we be ready, available, and willing to be poured out for His Kingdom.
