LEGACY: HAND-ME-DOWNS
Psalm 145:4 (ESV) “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.”
Every generation receives something from the one before it. We may receive faith, wisdom, opportunities, good examples, or even things that we wish we had never received—patterns, fears, hurts, and unhealthy attitudes.
But what we receive does not have to determine where we finish.
The Bible shows us that legacy is about more than simply passing something on. God calls us to build with what He has placed in our hands, strengthen it, and make it fruitful. We don't just have to inherit something—we can improve it. David understood this when Saul gave him his armour. The armour wasn't necessarily bad; it simply wasn't what God had given David to use. David had to walk in what God had prepared for him.
In the same way, we don't have to reproduce everything from the previous generation. What matters is passing on our faith, wisdom, character, and testimony so that the next generation knows the same God who has carried us.
We may not be able to rewrite our beginning, but with God, we can influence what comes next. Our lives can leave behind evidence that God is faithful—more faith than fear, more wisdom than wounds, and more of Jesus than anything else.
Lord, thank You for everything You have placed in my hands. Help me to be faithful with what I have received and to build something that will bless the generation coming after me. Help me to break unhealthy patterns and pass on faith, wisdom, love, and Your truth. May my life leave behind evidence of Your faithfulness and point others to Jesus. Amen.
Think of one thing God has placed in your hands—your family, faith, gift, opportunity, or testimony. Ask God how you can strengthen it, grow it, and eventually hand it forward to someone else.
Today we declare that our legacy will point people to Jesus. We will carry more faith than fear, more wisdom than wounds, and more testimony than tradition. We will not simply inherit what was handed to us—we will build, strengthen, and improve it. We will leave behind evidence of God's faithfulness. What God has placed in our hands will become a blessing to the generation coming after us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
