“So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together, Isaac turned to Abraham and said, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘We have the fire and the wood,’ the boy said, ‘but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?’ ‘God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,’ Abraham answered. And they both walked on together.” Genesis 22:6-8 (NLT)
Isaac carried the wood for his own sacrifice, climbing the mountain beside his father — unaware of what was coming. In the New Testament, we see Jesus doing the same: carrying His wooden cross up the hill to Calvary, fully aware of what was ahead.
The connection between Isaac and Jesus is more than symbolic. Isaac asks, “Where is the sheep?” and years later, John the Baptist answers, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29). Sometimes we walk through life like Isaac — carrying weight we don’t understand, asking questions that don’t have answers yet. But God always provides. On the other side of the mountain, the ram was already climbing. And on the hill of Calvary, the Lamb was already given.
Jesus invites us to follow Him — to carry our own crosses, to trust God even when the road is unclear. Today, just carry the wood. Obedience always leads to provision.
Prayer:
Lord, help me trust You even when I can’t see the full picture. I choose to walk with You and carry whatever You’ve placed in my hands. Amen.
