“When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.’ And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’ And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.” Luke 5:4–7 (ESV)
Have you ever felt like Simon—tired, frustrated, and ready to pack it up after trying so hard and seeing nothing happen? That’s exactly where Jesus meets him. Not when the nets are full, but when they’re empty.
When Jesus tells Simon to “let down your nets for a catch,” it doesn’t make sense. Simon is the fisherman. Jesus is the carpenter. Simon has been working all night—he knows these waters. Yet something powerful happens when Simon chooses obedience over understanding: “But at your word, I will let down the nets.”
That’s where miracles begin—at His word.
The Greek word used for “let down” is chalasate, which means to loosen or release control. Jesus wasn’t just asking Simon to lower his net—He was asking him to release his grip on how he thought things should go.
Sometimes, God’s blessing doesn’t come when you know best—it comes when you finally let go. And when Simon obeys, the nets begin to break under the weight of abundance. Not because the blessing failed, but because it was bigger than his current capacity.
The breaking isn’t destruction—it’s divine tension. God was expanding Simon’s capacity for the catch.
That’s what happens when God moves in your life. The same systems, schedules, and comfort zones that worked before might suddenly start to strain under the weight of new growth. When the nets begin to break, it’s not an attack—it’s an announcement: God is increasing your capacity.
But notice—Simon doesn’t panic. He signals his partners for help. Because overflow is never meant to be handled alone. The blessing of God will always require collaboration.
The catch was too great for one boat, and the harvest is too great for one person, one leader, or one church. We are called to fish together—not to compete boats, but to complete boats.
Lord Jesus, thank You that You step into my boat even when I’m weary and empty. Teach me to obey You even when it doesn’t make sense. Help me to release control, to trust Your timing, and to recognize that breaking is often the beginning of blessing. Expand my capacity, Lord—spiritually, emotionally, and practically. And give me the humility to partner with others so that Your harvest can be gathered. In Your name I pray, Amen.
Ask God to show you one area where He’s calling you to “let down your net” again. Maybe it’s reaching out to someone, stepping into a ministry opportunity, or reattempting something that once failed. Take a small step of obedience this week—not because it makes sense, but because He said so.
We will trust God’s word over our feelings. We will obey even when we don’t understand. We will grow with the stretching, strengthen our nets, and share the catch. Our home is not a competing boat—it’s a completing boat. Together, we will cast, catch, and release for the glory of God.
