SERMON NOTES

Crossing the Bridge at Midnight

Life sometimes brings us to a place where going back is not an option, and the way forward looks impossible. It’s in those very moments—when fear surrounds us and the unknown lies ahead—that God often steps in to make a way.

In Exodus 14:21–22 (NIV) we read: “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.”

God Builds Bridges in the Dark

One of the most profound truths in this story is when the miracle happened—at night. Not when things were calm or clearly visible, but in the dark. “...all that night the Lord drove the sea back…” Exodus 14:21

We often associate God’s movement with the daytime—when life is bright, clear, and full of answers. But Scripture shows us time and again that God moves powerfully in the night seasons.

  • In Genesis 32:22-24, Jacob wrestled with God at night and walked away changed—given a new name and a new identity.
  • In Acts 16:25-26, Paul and Silas sang hymns at midnight in prison, and God shook the foundations with an earthquake, setting everyone free.
  • In Matthew 14:25, Jesus walked on water in the fourth watch of the night, meeting His disciples in the storm.

Night often represents fear, confusion, and loneliness. Yet it is also the place of divine revelation, deep trust, and God’s miraculous intervention. So what if your dark season isn’t punishment, but preparation? What if your midnight pain is just the sound of the waters parting in the distance?

Delay is Not Denial

A powerful truth borrowed from Dr. Stafford Petersen's message is this: When God delays, He is often repositioning, not absent.

In Exodus 14:19-20 (NIV), we see a shift: “Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them…”

God had been leading the Israelites from the front, guiding them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. But just before the Red Sea crossing, God moved behind them—not to abandon them, but to protect them from Pharaoh's army.

We can sometimes become frustrated when God doesn't seem to be moving us forward. But what if He’s not silent—just shielding us from an unseen enemy? His presence is not only about breakthrough; it’s also about protection.

Midnight Moves Require Morning Faith

Crossing the sea didn’t happen in broad daylight. According to Exodus 14:22: “The Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.”

They didn’t wait for the sun to rise. They moved at night, surrounded by uncertainty, with danger towering beside them. Faith isn’t about waiting until everything is clear and safe. It’s about taking the next step even when you can’t see the whole path. God may not show you the destination, but He will show you your next step. Obedience doesn’t have a time slot. God opened the sea at midnight, and the invitation was simple: Walk. Now.

So whatever bridge you’re standing before, no matter how dark the night may seem—if God is opening the way, it’s time to step forward. The bridge is open.
