Finding Peace in the Midst of the Season: A Reflection on Advent
As we approach Christmas, we find ourselves in the midst of the Advent season—a time of expectation, waiting, and longing. The word “Advent” means “coming” or “arrival,” and it connects the past, present, and future. It is a time to reflect on the ancient anticipation of the Messiah, to celebrate His birth, and to remain alert for His promised return.
How is Your Christmas Season Going?
For many, the Christmas season can feel more hectic than peaceful. Words like busy, overwhelmed, or lonely might better describe this time of year. The pressures of life—be it work, finances, relationships, or even the exhaustion of the year gone by—can make peace seem elusive.
But peace is not just a distant ideal or a seasonal sentiment. True peace is found in Jesus, who meets us in our storms and walks with us through life’s uncertainties.
#1: Peace Shows Up in the Storms
The nativity scene, with its calm and serene imagery, is often idealized as the epitome of peace. Yet, Mary and Joseph’s reality was anything but peaceful. In a time of Roman oppression and personal challenges, they found themselves navigating the complexities of a census journey, childbirth far from home, and the immense responsibility of parenting God’s Son.
In these very struggles, God showed up. He entered into their chaos and uncertainty, just as He does in ours. Whether in pain, fear, confusion, or grief, God’s presence brings peace that can calm even the most turbulent storms.
#2: Peace Defies Circumstances
Peace is not dictated by our circumstances. Paul writes in Philippians 4:7:
“The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
This peace stands guard over our thoughts and emotions, offering protection from the storms of life. It transcends logic, defying the chaos around us. Isaiah 26:3 echoes this truth:
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.”
God’s peace works from the inside out, grounding us even when everything around us feels unsteady.
#3: Peace Is a Person
Ultimately, peace is not just a concept or a feeling—it is a person. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, as Ephesians 2:14 declares:
“For he himself is our peace.”
Jesus bridges the gap between us and God, offering us wholeness and restoration. He invites us to bring our burdens to Him and experience the rest that only He can provide:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
– Matthew 11:28-29
Embracing Peace This Advent Season
In these final days leading up to Christmas, look to the Prince of Peace. No matter the challenges or storms in your life, remember that He is with you, offering His peace that surpasses understanding. Worship Him, not just in celebration but in surrender, trusting Him to guard your heart and fill your spirit with His shalom.
Let this Advent season be a time to encounter the peace that comes from Jesus—the peace that transcends life’s circumstances, calms the storms, and fills our hearts with wholeness.
A Blessing of Peace
“May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.”
– 2 Thessalonians 3:16
May Jesus, the Prince of Peace, reign in your heart this season, bringing rest to your soul and wholeness to your spirit.
