WEEKLY DEVOTION

GET OUT OF THE SHALLOWS

Scripture:

Ezekiel 47:5 (NIV) “He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.”

Devotional Thought:

It is possible to be close to the water and still stay in the shallows. In Ezekiel's vision, the water kept getting deeper—ankle-deep, knee-deep, waist-deep, and eventually deep enough to swim in. The deeper Ezekiel went, the less control he had. Eventually, his feet could no longer touch the bottom. He had to trust the water. Sometimes that's what God is inviting us to do.

We can be close to God while still holding tightly to our own plans, our comfort, and our control. But going deeper with God means allowing His presence to affect the way we live. It changes our decisions, priorities, relationships, habits, and obedience.

You know you're going deeper with God when His current starts pushing against the way you used to walk.

That can be uncomfortable. God may ask us to forgive when we'd rather hold onto the hurt. He may ask us to trust when we want answers. He may ask us to let go when we want control.

But there comes a point where we have to stop trying to control everything and start trusting God. And the river in Ezekiel's vision didn't just get deeper—it brought life wherever it went. Even the Dead Sea was transformed when the river reached it.

Maybe there are places in your life that you've already called dead. A relationship, a dream, a situation, or an area of your faith. Don't call it dead simply because you haven't seen the river yet. Go deeper. Stay in the river. Let God bring life.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What area of my life am I still trying to control instead of trusting God?
  2. What might God be asking me to surrender as I go deeper with Him?
  3. Is there a “dead” or dry area of my life where I need to believe God can bring new life?

Prayer:

Father, I don't want to stay in the shallows. I want to go deeper with You. Help me surrender my need for control and trust You even when I cannot touch the bottom. Let Your presence change the way I think, live, speak, and make decisions. Bring Your river into every dry, broken, and lifeless place in my life. Where I have given up hope, help me believe again. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Action Step:

Identify one area where you've been trying to stay in control. Surrender it to God today and take one practical step of faith—even if you don't know what the next step will look like.

Family Declaration:

Today we declare: We will not stay in the shallows. We choose to go deeper with God and trust Him beyond what we can control. His river will flow through our home, our relationships, our work, and every area of our lives. Where there is dryness, life is coming. Where there is bitterness, fresh water is coming. Where there is brokenness, healing is coming. We will stay in the river and trust God wherever He leads us. Amen.
