THE FATHER WHO KEPT THE LIGHT ON
Luke 15:20 (NIV) "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him."
The story of the Prodigal Son is often remembered as the story of a lost son, but it is just as much the story of a faithful father. While the son was away making poor choices and wasting his inheritance, the father never stopped looking down the road. He never stopped hoping. He never stopped believing that one day his son would come home.
When the son finally returned, the father didn't respond with anger, rejection, or condemnation. He ran toward him with compassion, grace, and restoration. Before the son could even finish his apology, the father was already embracing him.
This is a beautiful picture of God's heart toward us. No matter how far we wander, God never stops loving us. He never stops watching the road. He never stops extending an invitation to come home.
It is also a challenge for us. The father didn't only pursue the rebellious younger son; he also went looking for the older son whose heart had become hardened by resentment. God's heart is that no one is left behind. Perhaps today there is someone you've been praying for—a child, spouse, friend, sibling, or colleague. Don't stop believing. Keep the light on. Keep praying. Keep loving. God is still working in places you cannot see.
Father God, thank You for loving me with an unfailing love. Thank You that You never stop pursuing Your children and that Your grace reaches us before we could ever earn it. Help me to reflect Your heart by loving others, extending grace, and refusing to give up on people. Strengthen my faith as I pray for those who are far from You. Remind me that You are still working, still drawing people home, and still restoring lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Identify one person who is far from God or going through a difficult season. Spend time praying for them today and look for an opportunity this week to encourage them with a call, message, or act of kindness.
As for me and my house, we will reflect the heart of the Father. We will love deeply, pray faithfully, and keep believing for those who are far from God. We will make room at the table, extend grace freely, and leave no one behind. In Jesus' name, Amen.
