2 Kings 3:16–17 (NKJV) “Thus says the Lord: ‘Make this valley full of ditches.’ For thus says the Lord: ‘You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water…’”
Sometimes God asks us to prepare for things we cannot yet see. That can feel frustrating because we naturally want proof before we commit. We want to see the rain before we start digging. But faith often works the opposite way.
In this story, God told the people to dig ditches in a dry valley before there was any sign of rain. No clouds. No wind. No evidence. Just a command to prepare.
The valley was uncomfortable, dry, and difficult — yet it was the very place God chose to fill with water. The miracle was connected to their obedience. Many times, we want God to move us out of the valley, while God is asking us to dig in it. We want quick breakthroughs, but God is developing deeper faith. Valleys teach us to trust Him when nothing seems to be changing.
The ditches represented expectation. The bigger the preparation, the greater the capacity for what God wanted to pour out. Maybe today you feel tired, discouraged, or spiritually dry. Maybe you have been praying and not seeing immediate results. This devotion is a reminder not to stop digging.
Keep praying. Keep serving. Keep worshipping. Keep believing. Because God still sends water to dry places.
Father, thank You that You are faithful even in dry seasons. Help me to trust You when I cannot yet see the outcome. Give me strength to keep digging, keep believing, and keep obeying even when the ground feels hard. Increase my faith and enlarge my capacity for what You want to do in my life. Teach me not to waste the valley, but to grow deeper in You through it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Choose one practical way to “dig anyway” this week. It could be spending time in prayer daily, returning to serving faithfully, encouraging someone else, forgiving someone, or taking a step of obedience you’ve been delaying.
As for me and my house, we will trust God in every season. We will not stop digging because the ground feels dry. We will make room for what God wants to do in our lives. We believe that God is faithful, and He will send water to prepared places. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
