2 Timothy 1:5 (NLT) “I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.”
When people look at a tree, they notice the fruit, the branches, and the leaves. But the health of the tree is actually determined beneath the surface, at the roots. In the same way, our spiritual lives are shaped by what is happening deep within our hearts.
Timothy became a strong follower of Jesus because his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice took time to nourish the ground of his life with the Word of God. They didn’t just speak about faith occasionally; they lived it consistently. Their genuine faith became a foundation Timothy could stand on.
Sometimes we underestimate the power of daily encouragement, Scripture shared around the table, prayers spoken over our children, or the example we set through the way we live. But seeds planted faithfully over time produce fruit in the right season.
This devotion is also a reminder that we all influence someone. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, sibling, mentor, friend, or leader, someone is watching your life. The question is: what are we planting beneath the surface?
God’s Word nourishes the soil of our hearts. It teaches us, corrects us, strengthens us, and prepares us for every good work. When we allow God to work deeply in us first, our lives begin to reflect Jesus to others naturally.
Lord, thank You for the people who have poured faith into my life. Help me to nourish the ground of my heart with Your Word every day. Let my faith be genuine, sincere, and rooted deeply in You. Show me how to encourage and lead others toward Jesus through both my words and my example. Heal any hardness in my heart and help me walk in love, grace, and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Take time today to encourage someone spiritually. Share a Scripture, pray with them, send an encouraging message, or remind them of God’s faithfulness. Also spend a few quiet moments asking God to show you what is happening beneath the surface of your own heart.
As for me and my house, we will build our lives on the Word of God. We will nourish the ground of our hearts with truth, faith, love, and obedience. We will pass on a genuine faith to the next generation and reflect Jesus in the way we live, speak, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
