WEEKLY DEVOTION

CATCH & RELEASE :

The Catch and the Call

Scripture Reading:

“So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, ‘Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’ For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.’ So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.” Luke 5:7–11 (NIV)

Devotional Thought:

Peter had just experienced the greatest catch of his life — nets breaking, boats sinking, abundance beyond imagination. Yet in that moment of overwhelming success, something unexpected happened: Peter didn’t cling to the blessing; he fell at Jesus’ feet.

The miracle didn’t just fill Peter’s boat… it revealed Peter’s heart. He suddenly realized, “This isn’t skill… this is the Savior.” Success became the moment where Jesus was seen clearly.

That’s the pattern of discipleship: Sometimes God blesses you, not to reward you, but to reveal Himself to you. Peter’s abundance led to awareness. His full nets led to a humbled heart. And right there, in the middle of blessing, Jesus spoke his calling: “From now on you will fish for people.” The blessing was only the bridge — the calling was the destination.

Jesus didn’t make Peter a better fisherman; He made him a fisher of men. And then comes the most radical part: “They left everything and followed Him.” The boats. The nets. The income. The catch of a lifetime. Why? Because they found something — rather, Someone — worth more than everything they gained.

The greatest test of faith is not failure… It’s success. Can you walk away from full nets when Jesus calls? Peter didn’t lose a catch — He gained a calling. He released the blessing to embrace his purpose. The real miracle is not what Jesus puts in your hands… It’s what He calls you to lay down.

The blessing was in the boat. But the purpose was waiting on the shore.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Has God ever used success, blessing, or breakthrough to get your attention?
  2. When God fills your nets, do you cling to the fish or fall at His feet?
  3. What skill, gift, or strength might God be repurposing for your calling?
  4. What “nets” might Jesus be asking you to release so you can follow Him fully?
  5. Are you willing to walk away from what is good to pursue what is God?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for every blessing You have brought into my life. But more than the blessing, I want You. Help me to see Your hand in moments of abundance and to fall at Your feet in surrender. Reveal my calling through the gifts You’ve placed within me. Give me the courage to leave behind anything that holds me back from following You fully. Where You lead, I will go. What You ask, I will release. You are my treasure, my calling, and my reward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action Step:

Identify one “net” — a comfort, habit, pattern, or pursuit — that you tend to hold tightly. Pray over it this week and intentionally loosen your grip. Ask God: “What do You want me to release so I can follow You more fully?” Then take one practical step toward surrender.

Family Declaration:

We are a family that follows Jesus above everything else. We will not cling to the catch when Christ is calling us higher. We choose obedience over comfort, calling over convenience, and surrender over success. We declare that Jesus is our treasure and our reward. Where He leads, we will go — together. We leave the nets behind and step boldly into His purpose for our lives!
