"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Revelation 3:20 (NKJV)
I once heard a story about a mother who told her little daughter that Jesus lived in her heart. The girl put her ear to her mom’s chest, listening intently. When asked what she was doing, she responded, “I’m listening for Jesus.” The mother asked, “What is He saying right now?” After a moment, the little girl replied, “I think He’s making coffee.”
It’s a funny little story, but it makes us think—what would we hear if we truly listened for Jesus? What would He say about the state of our hearts?
Revelation 3:20 is often seen as an invitation to non-believers, but in context, it was directed to the Church of Laodicea—the lukewarm church. Jesus was speaking to those whose hearts were compromised, urging them to open the door and let Him in.
Today, many of us treat our relationship with Jesus like fast food. We’re always on the go, rushing through life. We barely take time to sit and truly dine with Him. But in Jesus’ time, meals were not hurried affairs. They were a time of fellowship, connection, and relationship-building. Jesus desires that kind of deep relationship with us. He doesn’t want to be a rushed, once-a-week guest; He wants to be at home in our hearts.
Paul echoes this sentiment in Ephesians 3:14-21 (NIV), praying that Christ would dwell in the hearts of believers. This wasn’t about salvation—it was about deepening the relationship. The Greek word used for “dwell” (katoikeo) means to settle down and be at home permanently.
So ask yourself:
Jesus doesn’t want a guest room; He wants the title deed to the house. He wants to be the Master, not just an honored visitor.
A powerful contrast is found in Genesis. Abraham welcomed the Lord into his tent and shared a meal with Him. But Lot, living in the sinful city of Sodom, met the angels at the city gate, and they hesitated to enter his home. If Jesus knocked on your heart today, where would He find you? At the entrance, eagerly welcoming Him in, or at the gateway of compromise?
Imagine Jesus walking through your life:
Jesus already sees everything. If there are things in our lives that would make Him uneasy, we need to surrender them. It’s time to give Him access to every nook and cranny of our hearts. Let Him clean house.
Are you merely giving Jesus a seat at the table, or have you handed Him the keys? Have you allowed Him to settle down, be at home, and lead your life? Like Abraham, let’s create a space where the Lord is welcomed and comfortable. Let’s move beyond a casual acquaintance with Christ and into a deep, abiding relationship.
